The New Street Bar and Grill is well worth a visit. You’re greeted in winter by the unmistakable smell and warmth of a log fire accompanied by subtle lighting. This bistro offers up quality British produce in an unstuffy, relaxed setting that’s all the more relaxed if you start with one of the head barman’s latest cocktail creations: try the Lavender Martini (think parma violets that make you warm all over) while sitting in on one of the small tub chairs, which, I’m reliably informed, were bought from London’s notorious Stringfellows nightclub. Thankfully, they’ve been reupholstered!
Mains included a delicious Waygu burger, haunch of local venison and a whole Brixham plaice, all cooked to perfection and served with either boiled new potatoes or crispy triple cooked chips. And it would be simply criminal not to wash dinner down without a glass or two of local sparkling Nyetimber.
New Street Bar & Grill is a fresh and modern approach to dining situated in the heart of Petworth. The smell of a burning wood fire in the centre of the restaurant brings a homely vibe and with its chicest choice of the interior.
The focus is on great ingredients cooked simply to a high standard, with an emphasis on grilled dishes including locally sourced meat and game, as well as seafood and fish. Sunday lunches are a relaxed affair and you can preorder (3 days’ notice required) a sharing dish such as a whole spit roast chicken, 8-hour slow cooked leg of lamb or rack of lamb. The modern bar offers fantastic selections of wines by the glass or bottle as well as cocktails, a wide or array of spirits and a selection of small plates ideal for sharing informally.
with a flourish, it has re-established itself on the premise that everymeal is a special occasion - whether it is grabbing a quick lunch as you pass through Petworth, meeting informally with friends, holding that big birthday bash or even organising a business conference (made possible by some exceptional reception rooms on the first floor). But the mood is both rural and relaxed
